Barnes and Noble Playathon Dec 1, 2013
Thank you to all of the BAMTA teachers and their students who participated in the Barnes and Noble Playathon this year. Our profits were nearly $500 so we are very grateful! Teachers, please thank your parents and students on behalf of BAMTA for their continued support.

Minutes from our Meeting Jan 4, 2013
Kay Beauchamp, Vice President, called the meeting to order at 10:15 am. President, Hannah Kelley is excused due to illness in her family. Carol Peterson read the minutes from our Nov. 2012 meeting and they were approved as read. Beverly Fitch gave the Treasurer's Report and it was also approved with $2094.22 in Checking and $4071.22 in Savings. The profit was very good for the Barnes and Noble Playathon. We earned $526.58 minus $75 for piano rental = $451.58 total profit.
Carol Peterson reminded members that BAMTA Scholarship Appli- cations are due to her by March 1. The form is on p. 38 in your yearbook. Students need to also include a college acceptance letter or some proof that they have been accepted to a college.
Shari Higgins reported on the BAMTA Spring Competiton (April 20). The information is on pages 43-45 in your yearbook and the form is on page 46. She gave us a handout of FAQ's for the event (attached) and we discussed it. Please read carefully and direct any questions to Shari. Forms are to be mailed or emailed to Carol Peterson by March 15. If you email the form, you need to mail a check by the deadline.
We enjoyed some nice refreshments, provided by Kay Beauchamp, following which she introduced our speaker, Dr. Michael Dean from OBU.
Dr. Dean taught about Baroque Articulation Guidelines. For example: **In 85-90% of Baroque music, if one voice plays faster (8th or 16th notes at the same time another voice plays slower(quarter or 8th notes), the faster notes are legato and the slower notes are detached.
**Step-wise motion is often legato especially if the passage is chro- matic. Skips are detached. He used a powerpoint presentation to ill- ustrate examples of these principles. The program was very informative.
The meeting was adjourned at about 11:40 am.
Members in attendance included: Mary Ann Allison, Kay Beauchamp, Kiersten Fair, Beverly Fitch, Shirley Francis, Shari Higgins, Carol Peterson, Julia Tollefson.
Our next meeting is March 1, 2013

Time Invested In Practicing Pays Off For Young Musicians, Research Shows
ScienceDaily (2008-11-05) -- A new study has found that children who study a musical instrument for at least three years outperform children with no instrumental training -- not only in tests of auditory discrimination and finger dexterity (skills honed by the study of a musical instrument), but also on tests measuring verbal ability and visual pattern completion (skills not normally associated with music). ... > read full article
